Stammering or stuttering generally begins in childhood, between the ages of 2.5 and 5. Gentle speech therapy can help children and adults manage it at their own pace.
The exact cause of stammering is not known. The one factor considered important is genetics. Stammering is not caused by stress, bad parenting, emotional issues, or by imitating anyone. It is more common in boys than in girls.
Stammering support is available for both children and adults.
